Sumner Barr and Joan Phyllis Copeland were married on June 17, 1961 and this month will celebrate 50 wonderful years together. They were both students at the University of Massachusetts when they went out on their first date. Never one to deny his feelings, Sumner told Joan that night that he was going to marry her someday. He was taken in by her expressive, laughing eyes and competitive spirit. Throughout their courtship, they shared long walks, deep conversations, stolen kisses, and intense ping-pong games. A few years later, they welcomed parenthood with vigor and passed on their loves of life and learning and adventure to their family. Their love of travel has taken them around the world and they have shared great experiences with their entire extended family.
A true testament to their loving, joyful spirits are the friends they have known throughout their lives together. They love and are loved and admired by many. This summer we celebrate the amazing love of Sumner and Joan Barr.
