JANUARY SPECIAL OFFER FOR LOS ALAMOS RESIDENTS! The Los Alamos Shelter wants to thank the community for shopping locally and adopting locally. The shelter is offering one chance on a raffle for a $50 gift certificate to Pet Pangaea and a $50 gift certificate to Smith’s for each animal adopted from the shelter during the month of January. The animal must be one who arrived in 2013.
The Los Alamos Animal Shelter, 226 East Road, 662-8179, has a great selection of adoptable pets just waiting for their forever home! Dogs and cats are great at chasing away the blues on cold nights, so come adopt a new friend today! Be sure to check out the Petfinder website for pictures of adorable adoptables:
SHELTER HOURS: Noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends.
Also, be sure to check out the website at lafos.org, to get more information about volunteering, adopting and donating, as well as read up on some of the favorite animals and learn more about special needs animals, or cats and dogs currently in foster care.
All adoptable pets are microchipped, spayed, or neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations.
Two for one this week
Aleah — A 5-year-old, spayed, female with the most beautiful coat! She is a longhaired calico, and she would love for you to come see how soft her fur is! She likes to observe the cat room from her perch atop the cat tower, but she will quickly come down for attention when a friendly volunteer walks in the door. She relishes attention from humans, but she can get easily worked up, so she would most likely be better with older, gentle kids rather than young children. She is also reported to do well with other respectful cats and even dogs if given a proper introduction!
Antwon Cloud — Antwon Cloud is a 9-year-old, all-white Oriental Shorthair. He was surrendered with other cats due to their owner’s health issues. Antwon Cloud currently has a few health issues of his own, so shelter staff and volunteers are working hard to get him feeling better. In the meantime, he would appreciate some gentle attention from visitors and volunteers, and a quiet home where he can be with his person. Oh, he is looking so much better these days!
Bubbles — A 3-year-old, neutered male, tabby with white, long hair and a cute pink nose. He is very gentle and friendly. Bubbles was surrendered when his owner moved out of the country. The owner recommends scratching post. He was surrendered with Emperor and they would make a great two-for-one pair. He is good with adults, gentle children, cats and gentle dogs.
DQ — A recently surrendered, neutered, male Manx. He is still very frightened and confused about being at the shelter, so staff and volunteers are slowly getting to know him and help him adjust to life at the shelter. He is now starting to enjoy gentle attention from adults.
Ella — This very pretty, 4-year-old, spayed, female Siamese mix is looking for a quiet home where she can be the only pet. Her family is very sad to part with her, but the stress of sharing a home with other cats has affected her health. Ella’s veterinary care is up to date and she needs insulin twice a day. A less active home will probably make her diabetes easier to manage. To visit Ella in foster care call 412-0700.
Mountain — A young, neutered, male, white kitty with some black markings. Originally part of a colony on Alabama Street, he has been in foster care since August. He is now at the shelter to see if he will allow gentle volunteers to socialize him. For more information, call his sponsor at 470-6973.
Sassy — A new surrender from Santa Fe. She is a 5-1/2 year old, chocolate point Siamese, getting vet update Wednesday. Surrendered for not getting along with the cat and the dog in her home. Sassy dislikes noise and kids. So far she has been content being out and about in the cat room. She is sweet and cuddly with a single owner, otherwise she is shy. If provided a scratching post-cat tree, will not claw furniture She was very cooperative and happy for attention, rolling around in her bed.
Sparkle — Sparkle is one cool cat! He is a young, neutered, tan and white cat, with one blue eye and one green eye! Sparkle came from a feral cat colony living on Alabama Street, but is so friendly. He can still be a bit skittish at times though, so he would be best in a home without young children.
Pinono — A large, friendly, domestic short hair, orange tabby neutered male, adopted from the Santa Fe shelter. Microchip directed shelter workers to the adopter, who has been contacted but not yet come to bring this nice cat home. Meanwhile, this nice guy is enjoying the communal cat room at the shelter, where he is gentle with the other cats. Vet care is updated.
Whirley — A frightened, tabby kitten who somehow found his way to Los Alamos from a feral colony in Santa Fe. He has allowed one very gentle adult volunteer to touch him.
Xena — A spayed, female, orange tabby, surrendered for expressing her dislike for sharing her family with other cats. She can be a bit hissy with other cats in the cat room, but she has learned to get along with them as long as they don’t bother her too much. She enjoys being petted, and she will let out a cute little chirp when she’s happy. She would prefer to do without the presence of children, but she could probably learn to live with other felines if given a little bit of time to adjust. Shelter staff and volunteers think that she can probably rapidly deal with any “annoying” canines in the household too!
Ziva — This beautiful, white and gray tabby is an 8-year-old, spayed, female that loves to observe the cat room from atop a cat tower, so she can keep tabs on all the cats. She was surrendered for not getting along with the other cat in the household, but she has been OK with other cats coming up to say hi, so she will probably do fine in a multi-cat household, if given a proper introduction and time to adjust. One volunteer recently learned that she loves to be cuddled, as long as she can lie in her bed and not have to be in your arms. She would do best in a home without young children or dogs.
Bronson — This 8-month-old pit. His foster mom reported that in a low-key foster environment, he is really starting to come out of his shell. He is still a bit dependent on other dogs for confidence, and he would love to have a dog buddy in the house to help show him the ropes and give him a little more confidence. He also loves play-dates with other dogs! To meet Bronson, call his foster home at 501-0790.
ChuChu — This beautiful, 2-1/2 year old, neutered, male ridgeback cross has had a tough go of things recently, after managing to escape from several homes. He is a big guy who can be a little shy with strangers, but is very loyal to those he learns to trust. He would be happy as an only dog, but he would also be fine with some canine friends. He is very trainable and loves treats! Volunteers will be working hard to ensure that ChuChu finds a home where he feels safe and will not be able to escape. For a personalized introduction to ChuChu, call 412-3451 or 433-8617.
Dallas — A year old, spayed, female, German Shepherd cross. She came into the shelter very frightened, but she has made great progress with the work of shelter volunteers. In fact, she recently went to the dog park and played for over an hour with a chocolate lab that was there! She is still a little scared of new people and would probably be best in a home without children. She loves training and taking walks and would love a job. She likes to play with the big boy dogs. For a personalized introduction to Dallas, call her sponsor at 501-0790.
Noelle — A tiny, female, Staffordshire puppy with black with white markings. She is very gentle and quiet. After spay, she may be adopted out of her foster home. To meet Noelle in foster care, call 412-3451.
Mario and WeeGee — Young cattle dog brothers who arrived at the shelter with little socialization. We will be working with them to build confidence and help them relax around people.
