The Los Alamos County Little League All-Stars senior and 10-11 softball teams will begin state tournament play Saturday.
Los Alamos County’s seniors will take on District 9 champion Ysleta in the opening round of the state tournament at the Franklin Miles complex. Game time is 10 a.m.
Meanwhile, the 10-11 All-Stars will open the tournament at 3 p.m. The 10-11 tournament will be hosted by Thunderbird Little League in Albuquerque.
The senior All-Stars are one of four teams vying for the right to advance to the regional tournament, which will be played this year in Vidalia, La.
Copper and Gallup will face off in the other first round contest Saturday, which will follow the Los Alamos-Ysleta game. The winners of the two games will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The senior league All-Stars are comprised of girls ages 13 and above. Los Alamos manager Roger Anaya said about half his team is on the younger end of the spectrum.
Last year, a combined White Rock-Los Alamos All-Star team won the District 1 title and advanced to the regional playoff, which was played in Santa Fe — the host district gets an automatic bid into the regionals.
The team’s stint at the regional tournament was a short one, however, as it fell to both Vidalia and Texas East.
The state tournament continues at Franklin Miles Park through Monday night.
In the 10-11 tournament, five teams are entered, including Los Alamos County. Should Los Alamos win its tournament opener, it would play a quarterfinal game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Albuquerque. Should it drop the opener, it would play Sunday afternoon in an elimination game.
The championship game is set for 6 p.m. Monday.
