The Los Alamos Public Schools’ athletic office announced this morning it was postponing all athletic activity for this weekend.
Los Alamos had several events scheduled this weekend, including two District 2AAAA basketball games, a swimming meet on the road and a home wrestling tournament.
Instead, Los Alamos and many schools around the state will have an unexpected weekend off.
The postponements come as a result of the energy crisis and Gov. Susana Martinez’s state of emergency pronouncement. Most schools in the state canceled classes Friday — Los Alamos was one of the few exceptions — and most weekend athletic activities have been postponed.
Santa Fe Public Schools’ athletic director Michael “Skip” Hemperley said in the past three days he’s had to call off 32 separate athletic events, including middle school and high school.
Santa Fe lost two days of school and all facilities have been shut down at least through Monday.
“What’s unfortunate with these games is they’re important games,” Hemperley said this morning. “We had them staggered out, but we might have weekend back-to-back district games that could impact seeding in 2AAAA.”
