One of the most popular local breakfast spots will have a special guest Saturday.
Alex Kirk, the former Los Alamos Hilltopper basketball star who’s currently trying his luck to latch on with a NBA team, will make an appearance at Chili Works on Trinity Drive.
Weather permitting, Kirk will hold an autograph session at the restaurant. He’s scheduled to appear at 10 a.m. and his session will run through noon.
“It will be kind of fun if it works out right,” said Jason Moss of Chili Works.
It’s been an eventful past month or so for Kirk. Kirk threw his hat into the ring for the NBA draft, which occurred June 26.
He wasn’t selected in the draft, but was invited by the Cleveland Cavaliers to take part in the NBA’s Summer League tournament earlier this month. He appeared in all four of the Cavaliers’ games during that tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., starting one of them.
Kirk returned to Los Alamos to chill out for a bit following the Summer League and announced he would make a stop at Chili Works earlier this week.
The restaurant, best known for its breakfast burritos, has Saturday hours from 7 a.m.-noon. Kirk will be set up on the patio of the restaurant.
Interested fans are encouraged to bring items for him to sign.
Should Kirk earn a place on a NBA team — his next best opportunity to do so will likely be this fall during preseason workouts — he will be the first Los Alamos resident to procure a NBA roster spot and just one of a handful of former Los Alamos athletes to participate with a pro sports organization.
Earlier this week, the Los Alamos County Council officially proclaimed Aug. 9 as “Alex Kirk Day.”
In its proclamation, the County Council acknowledged both his athletic prowess in high school and college, as well as his contributions to the community at large.
