-A A +A

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE NEW MEXICO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL DEPARTMENT.

AIR QUALITY IMPACTS FROM ONGOING WILDFIRES WILL CONTINUE TODAY BUT BECOME MORE CONFINED TO THE SOUTHWEST QUADRANT OF NEW MEXICO.

THE EXPECTED DECREASE IN WIND SPEEDS AND MORE WESTERLY DIRECTION OF THE WIND... AND POTENTIALLY DECREASING SMOKE FROM THE EASTERN ARIZONA WILDFIRES... WILL CHANGE THE EXTENT OF THE IMPACT TODAY. THIS COMBINATION OF FACTORS IS EXPECTED TO CARRY THE SMOKE IN A MORE EASTERLY DIRECTION... LIMITING PRIMARY IMPACTS SOUTH OF I 40 AND WEST OF THE NEW MEXICO CENTRAL MOUNTAIN CHAIN.

THE DENSEST SMOKE TODAY IS EXPECTED TO BE NEAR GLENWOOD... LUNA... RESERVE AND RED HILL WHERE VISIBILITIES WILL BE BELOW THREE MILES AT TIMES. MORE DIFFUSE SMOKE ABOVE THREE MILES IN VISIBILITY WILL EXTEND AS FAR AS GRANTS... ALBUQUERQUE... LOS LUNAS... BELEN AND SOCORRO.

WINDS ON TUESDAY WILL BE FROM THE WEST AND NORTHWEST... FURTHER LIMITING AIR QUALITY IMPACTS TO MAINLY CATRON... SOCORRO... LINCOLN AND CHAVES COUNTIES.

THESE AREAS OF SMOKE CAN LEAD TO AIR QUALITY THAT IS UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS... INCLUDING THOSE WITH ASTHMA... LUNG OR HEART DISEASE... CHILDREN... AND PREGNANT WOMEN. YOUR EYES ARE YOUR BEST TOOLS TO DETERMINE IF IT IS SAFE TO BE OUTSIDE. REMEMBER... IF VISIBILITY IS TEN MILES AND UP... THE AIR QUALITY IS GOOD... SIX TO NINE MILES... AIR QUALITY IS MODERATE... THREE TO FIVE MILES... AIR QUALITY IS UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE PEOPLE... ONE AND A HALF TO TWO AND A HALF MILES... AIR QUALITY IS UNHEALTHY... ONE TO ONE AND A QUARTER MILES... AIR QUALITY IS VERY UNHEALTHY... AND THREE QUARTERS OF A MILE OR LESS... AIR QUALITY IS HAZARDOUS.
