Aggies, Lobos square off again
The University of New Mexico Lobos and the New Mexico State University Aggie men’s basketball team will continue their longstanding rivalry Saturday night at The Pit.
The Lobos and Aggies will meet for the 209th time at The Pit  in their rivalry, which dates back to 1904. It is the longest-standing rivalry for either basketball program.
UNM and NMSU will actually play back-to-back games this season. Following Friday’s game in Albuquerque, the two teams will meet in Las Cruces Wednesday night.
Last year, the teams split their home-and-home series, with each winning on the other’s home court. The Aggies won 62-53 at the Pit Nov. 16 but the Lobos romped to an 89-69 win at the Pan Am Center in late December.
For the previous 208 games, the Lobos hold a 113-95 edge. The Lobos are 70-37 in Albuquerque while the Aggies are 58-42 in Las Cruces.
This year, the Lobos and the Aggies have gotten off to very different starts. The Lobos are 10-0 — the second time under current coach Steve Alford they’ve attained that mark — and are ranked No. 17 in the nation by the Associate Press and No. 20 in the USA Today’s coaches’ poll.
