The New Mexico State University Aggie baseball team (35-22) was selected as one of 34 at-large bids to participate in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
The Aggies are going into the Tucson Regional as a No. 2 seed. The regional will be hosted by the University of Arizona.
The Aggies are scheduled to face No. 3 seed Louisville Friday at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
Also in the double-elimination regional is fourth-seeded Missouri, which will meet top-seeded Arizona Friday night. The winners and losers of each game will play Saturday.
The Aggies (35-22) looked like they might be the team to beat heading into the WAC tournament last week, boasting the No. 1 seed, but dropped two straight tournament games, to Fresno State and Louisiana Tech. The loss to Louisiana Tech, a team the Aggies topped three times in WAC play, earned a 15-12 win in a tournament elimination game.
During the regular season, the Aggies had one of the toughest schedules in the nation, playing seven teams that have made it into this year’s NCAA playoffs. Those teams include Rice, Sacred Heart, New Mexico, Kent State, Arizona, Baylor and Fresno State.
NMSU finished 12-10 against those teams as it took a two-game series from Arizona — then No. 5 nationally — and swept Sacred Heart in a four-game series.
