The jungle is jumpin’ with jazz and colorful characters. Students are in their final week of rehearsals for Atomic City Children Theater II’s production of Disney’s “The Jungle Book Kids.”
The cast is made up of 34 third and fourth-grade students from all five elementary schools in Los Alamos and White Rock.
ACCT II will present two performances of Disney’s “The Jungle Book Kids” at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. March 16 in the Mountain Elementary school gym. Those attending are asked to enter through the gym doors at the back of the school. The show runs about 30 minutes and admission is free.
Disney’s “The Jungle Book Kids” is adapted from the Disney classic animated film and includes “The Bare Necessities,” “Colonel Hathi’s March” and “I Wan’na Be Like You.” Mowgli (Morgan Schaller), Baloo (Lillian Petersen), Bagheera (Mattie Warrior), King Louie (Sam Hammond), Coconut Tree/Shanti (Margaret Stevens), Colonel Hathi (Craig Nye) and the rest of the jungle gang swing their way through adventures and thwart the tiger, Shere Khan (Lily Houghteling).
ACCT II is sponsored by The Atomic City Children’s Theater, an after-school program offered by the Los Alamos Public Schools to encourage academic excellence in students through direct involvement in live musical theater.
Now in its fifth season, ACCT features fifth through eighth-grade students, past productions have included Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man,” Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka Jr.,” Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast Jr.,” Disney’s “Mulan Jr.” and Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.”
In January, a group of 17 ACCT students traveled to the 2013 Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta, Ga., where they received the “Excellence in Ensemble Work” award.
ACCT II was newly-created this season to involve younger students in musical theater at an introductory level. The students are given an opportunity to learn basic theatrical skills in the process of presenting a musical.
The “Kids” version of “The Jungle Book” was chosen for this younger cast because of its shorter length and simplicity of presentation. It differs from the longer “junior” version shows performed by the older ACCT students, in that it is presented on a smaller stage, without microphones, costumes, make-up or sets. Disney’s “The Jungle Book Kids” is co-directed by Mountain’s music teacher Kelsey Cline and Gwen Wiens and assisted by ACCT directors Julia Sharpe-Fair and Daren Savage.
