A three-car accident closed the truck route to traffic for nearly three hours Monday afternoon.
“We shut down the truck route for the safety of all the emergency personnel working at the accident scene as well as the safety of commuters because so many vehicles were involved,” said Capt. Randy Foster of the Los Alamos Police Department, adding that two people were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
“At about 3:30 p.m., a Toyota Camry, a pick up and a Mercury Mountaineer SUV were involved in the accident,” Foster said. “The SUV actually rolled over.”
The Los Alamos Fire Department transported the drivers of the SUV and the Camry to the Los Alamos Medical Center with bumps and bruises and some complaints of pain, he said.
Thousands of cars leaving Los Alamos National Laboratory and those leaving work throughout the townsite bogged down on Trinity Drive. Commuters with the appropriate badges faced similar challenges on Pajarito Road.
Emergency workers cleared the accident around 6 p.m. and reopened the truck route, Foster said, adding that citations are pending results of the investigation.
