I am disturbed by the quarter page National Ad Council (NAC) advertisement on page 6 of the Jan. 30 newspaper. The advertisement depicts a young male with the slogan “could depict abusive behavior.” Not only does the ad reinforce negative stereotypes, which is against one of the main principles of the NAC, but it also implies guilt before innocence. How are the young men who open the morning sports page supposed to feel when they are criticized for something they haven’t even done? The irony is that the assumed “guilt” may unfortunately materialize itself into a self-fulfilling prophecy. There are certainly more tactful ways to advocate the worthy cause of domestic violence awareness and prevention. You may want to consider a broader perspective before going to press.Cody W.
