01-01-13 Assets in Action

-A A +A

I love this time of year, when we have lots of time off, the town has a slow pace and everyone seems mellow.

I hate the fact that the holidays are over, but there’s at least one exciting event ahead, the Community Asset Awards.

There are more than 50 nominees this year and they range in age from 13 to, forgive my guess, 83.

The best part for me is the secret. As folks are nominated, they only find out the date and the time for the recognition event. They don’t find out who nominated them or why until the actual event.

If they can’t attend the event, due to being out of town, they find out after the event takes place. It is akin to not being able to open a present until your birthday.

I know, it’s kind of corny on my part, but the goal is for the nominee is to ponder what wonderful thing they could have done and who noticed their kindness.

My goal for each year is to receive one more nomination than the previous year, but this year, we have so many that ticket sales are limited to only a few. Isn’t that a glorious problem to have?

We don’t have a space big enough to allow everyone that wants to attend to come to the event. It may be just the nominee and a guest that gets to attend the actual function. For that, I’m truly very sorry and elated at the same time.

The other thing I enjoy is the range of backgrounds that have their contributions highlighted, at our little event. It isn’t based on a specific amount of volunteer time served, job position, stature or income bracket. It ranges from small acts of compassion to daily business interactions that add to making our little village on the Hill, a little bit better.

An anonymous committee selects the big winner for the night, based on their own criteria. The committee is anonymous because then the influence element is removed from the judging. It isn’t who you know, what committee you sit on or how much you do or donate, it is simply just because.

The good news is that if you forgot to nominate someone, it starts all over again on Jan.7. We will post the new form up as soon as possible and get the ball rolling for 2013. My hope is that you will be inspired by at least one of the stories you hear. So hop on to AssetsInAction.info and take the time to tell us who needs to honored next time.

This week and next, I have asked folks to tell me about the good things they are doing for no reason or for very specific reasons and the feedback is wonderful! If you’d like to share on Facebook, feel free to do so. If I can share your contributions anonymously, drop me an email at AssetsInAction@att.net.
