In a critical Class 4A contest, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team found itself with some good looks throughout Friday’s game.
Unfortunately, the Hilltoppers couldn’t convert on those chances.
The Hilltoppers shot a meager 11 of 54 from the field and managed just eight points combined in the second and third quarters as they were routed by the St. Pius X Sartans in Albuquerque.
St. Pius had a consistent scoring game throughout Friday’s contest to win 50-32.
The victory by St. Pius (7-4) not only snapped Los Alamos’ four-game win streak, but gave the Sartans what could be an important head-to-head tiebreak advantage should the two teams be vying for similar playoff seeding next month – a not-implausible scenario.
The Hilltoppers (9-7) were without starters Hayley Each and Marissa Larribas Friday night. They relied mostly on veteran Erin Kirk, who finished with 15 points.
Following Kirk, however, no one else for Los Alamos finished with more than 5 points.
Los Alamos actually led 15-14 after one quarter, but managed just four points in the second quarter. With Los Alamos’ offensive woes, St. Pius had a chance to put the game away early, however, Los Alamos’ defense kept St. Pius scoreless for more than three minutes of the third quarter and the Hilltoppers were still within 26-21 near the midway point of the period.
From there, however, the Sartans started to roll. They went on a 13-2 run for the balance of the third quarter to put the game away.
Los Alamos has just two nondistrict contests remaining before the start of District 2-4A play, Tuesday night at Taos and Friday night hosting Sandia. The district season opens Jan. 22 with Los Alamos traveling to Bernalillo.
