Cross country: LA’s Foley takes third, boys team finishes 2nd behind Storm

By The Staff

The Los Alamos girls cross country team picked up its second victory in as many outings Friday afternoon.
The Hilltopper boys and girls took part in the Socorro Stampede, a new venue for Los Alamos’ cross country program. The race took place on a challenging course in warmer conditions than the Hilltoppers are used to.
Nevertheless, Los Alamos’ girls finished with a solid 26 points, topping a tough Class 5A school, Cleveland, which finished with 44 points.
In Friday’s competition, Los Alamos was without two top seniors, Jennifer Mooday and Teresa Sandoval, but even with the personnel shuffling, it was able to pick up a comfortable win.
Also at the race, Los Alamos’ boys earned 36 points, good for a second-place finish, three points behind meet winner Cleveland.
This was the first competition for the Hilltoppers since their season opener Aug. 31 at Albuquerque. The boys and girls teams won both ends of that race, including the Hilltopper boys’ upset win over Cleveland’s Storm.
Los Alamos head coaches Rob and Kathy Hipwood said the boys knew the Storm would come out aggressive Friday and the Storm didn’t disappoint.
Cleveland jumped out to a sizeable lead in the early part of the boys race, but Los Alamos fought back, making the race a series of 1-on-1 battles with the Storm late in the competition.
In the girls race, junior Mikayla Pulliam, who is emerging this season as one of the team’s leaders, had a solid showing, taking fourth place and second among the team behind Maddy Foley, who paced the team in her first varsity start of 2012.
In all, six of Los Alamos’ seven starters — Talia Dreicer, Jordan Parker and Nica Vasquez were the others — cracked the top eight individually.
For the boys, they were once again paced by Sean Reardon, who posted a sub-16:00 time to take third overall. Nick Hill, Zak Kennison and Orion Staples also broke into the top 10.
